Editor’s Notebook — Back The Neighborhood

June 2000

Historical June–August 2000 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

The Times is looking for a few additional volunteers.

We could use a reporter or two and we could certainly utilize someone who could sell ads for the paper. Volunteers would not have to labor more than an hour or two a month.

The Times has warm and friendly staffers who are more than eager to work with some fresh blood. It’s fun plus we give great neighborhood parties!

On June 3, I celebrated my 11th anniversary in Skinker DeBaliviere.

The years have passed very quickly.

The neighborhood has changed; it is safer; it looks better. And, best of all, lots of people want to live here and they’re willing to pay prices we would not have imagined in 1979, 1989, or 1995.

A good economy has certainly helped a number of city neighborhoods. But, ours has survived difficult times to become a model of diversity. That doesn’t mean there aren’t problems every now and again but we’ve come a long way.

The only down side is that some who want to buy a house here now can’t afford to.

The new playground now being built at Four Corners will make the area more attractive to families.

The community gardens are a source of pride, a fine meeting place, and a great way to supply your table with fresh produce.

Some want to live here because of the proximity to MetroLink. Others note the construction on Delmar and realize this may well be the good, new days.

There are cynics who dismiss the city as antiquated, inconvenient, not modern, not the place to be. Well, we’re here and I hope most of us are glad of it.

The young people who are working with Metropolis to promote the city deserve our thanks. Their motto is “The city is back. Back the city.” We can add “Skinker DeBaliviere is back. Back the neighborhood.” Except that our neighborhood was never gone.

It was challenged and its residents have met the challenge.
