On Sunday, June 4, parents and their young children, and other neighbors, gathered to celebrate the start of construction on a neighborhood playground for tots.

The playground is on DesPeres, adjacent to the SDCC office. At the groundbreaking, the little ones wore hardhats and had shovels and pails as they began to sift dirt in the lot which has already had its paving removed. Katrina Stierholtz, chair of the Playground Committee (and SDCC Board member) spoke and thanked the many donors and her committee for making this longheld dream soon become a reality. Special appreciation was expressed to Dan Skillman, City Parks Commissioner, who worked tirelessly to facilitate all phases of the project She introduced Alderman Lyda Krewson (D- 28) who helped make the project succeed.

She gave the playground $10,000 of ward capital funds. People continued to arrive and all enjoyed the soda and hot dogs the committee furnished. Stierholtz said the playground would be complete by August and the official opening will be at National Night Out, the first Tuesday in August.
