This month’s spotlight is on the Georgia Frontiere Library Dedication Program.

As you may already know, Ms. Frontiere is an alumna of Hamilton.

On Friday, April 26, we dedicated the library and held a tea and reception in her honor. Ms. Frontiere was accompanied by several of her former Hamilton classmates.

The library, where the dedication took place, had been Ms. Frontiere’s kindergarten classroom.

A welcome and opening remarks were given by fifth graders Ashley Cavanaugh and Long Pham. Next, Hamilton Preschool students Delaysia Henry and Dorez Rankins-Scott presented Ms. Frontiere with a framed copy of the invitation to the dedication. Mrs. Frontiere and the guests were greeted by the Reverend Earl Nance, Jr., President of the St. Louis Board of Education, and addressed by Dr. David J. Mahan, Superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools Dr. John E. Ingram, Jr., Assistant Superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools, presented a history of the Dr. Samuel Shepard Oratorical Contest and the Herbert Turner Memorial Writing Contest. Fifth grader Monica Hayes, Hamilton’s oratorical winner, recited the poem “0 Captain, My Captain” by Walt Whitman, and second grader Bridgette Davis read her winning composition, “A Snowy Day.” Next, Hamilton E.C.E.C. Principal Dr. Glenda Bryant welcomed Ms. Frontiere and invited her to visit Hamilton at any time.. Fifthgrader La Sandra Owens presented Ceremonial Scissors to Ms. Frontiere and the ribbon was cut, officially renaming the library “The Georgia Frontiere Library.” Following the ceremony, all guests enjoyed tea and hors d’oeuvres, and Ms. Frontiere and her guests toured the school accompanied by Hamilton Ambassadors, fifth graders LaShondra Richmond and Nichelle Thomas. Ms. Frontiere has established a scholarship fund that will allow Hamilton students to attend college.

The Drug Free Parade, which was the culmination of the Drug Free Schools Unit, was on Friday, May 3, 1996.

This has been a yearlong, school-wide project, initiated by Mrs. Catherine Parker, the Counselor at Hamilton E.C.E.C., and the Hamilton Drug Free Committee.

Each class made banners and signs with anti-drug slogans such as “Drug Free Starts With Me!” “Just Say NO!” “Hugs not Drugs” “Drug Free is the Way to Be!” and others.

The entire student body, led by drummers from the Stowe Middle School Band and the Hamilton E.C.E.C. Cheerleaders, paraded from the school grounds, east on Delmar, south on DeBaliviere, and west on Waterman and DeGiverville back to school.

We were accompanied by Ronald McDonald and Fredbird and numerous representatives from the St. Louis Police Department.

The students chanted slogans as they walked, and they laughed at Fredbird’s notorious antics. Everyone had a great time and this will be an annual spring event at Hamilton E.C.E.C.

In addition, the Speaker’s Day on Thursday, April 18, was a great success and we thank all of the professionals who participated, and the Drug Free Quilts that each grade level created are on display in the hallways, so we invite community members to stop by and take a look. Thanks to Mrs. Parker and her committee for all of the hard work that went into the Drug Free Schools Unit.

If you missed this information last month, an exciting educational opportunity at Hamilton E.C.E.C. is the introduction of The Hamilton Holistic Summer Academy, which will be held from June 24 through August 2.

This program, for students entering grades 1-5, will offer summer enrichment through accelerated, literacy-based learning.

The literacy-based activities will incorporate traditional Language Arts and math skills in a non-traditional, holistic format which will include aesthetic, sports, community resource, and entrepreneurial components. Applications for The Hamilton Holistic Summer Academy are available in the office at Hamilton E.C.E.C.
