October 1995

Historical October 1995 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Tic Tac Toe, an annual open house for three neighboring schools, will be held on Saturday, November 4, 1995, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The schools are The Wilson School on DeMun, Forsyth School on Forsyth. and The St. Michael School on Wydown at Ellenwood.

The St. Michael School, which has just celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary, is an Episcopal School for children of all faiths.

The curriculum is based on a balance of traditional academics with the collaborative Reggio approach. St. Michael’s is one of three preprimary programs in the St. Louis area which is based on the Reggio program (the other two are The College School in Webster Groves and the Clayton Early Childhood Center); in addition, it may be the only school which incorporates the Reggio approach in the kindergarten through sixth grades in the country. Known for drawing children into in-depth conversations and collaborative multi-discipline projects, the approach was originated in the preschool system of Reggio Amelia, Italy, which is considered to be among the ten best schools in the world. At The St. Michael School this approach enhances a core curriculum in the primary and elementary grades of Spanish, computer, environmental science, math, language arts, music, art, and physical education.

In the Episcopal school tradition, academic excellence is stressed in combination with discussions and active participation in character and moral development.

As part of that tradition, the school’s Board of Trustees awarded scholarships based on ten percent of its tuition income, which was the highest percentage of independent elementary schools in the St. Louis area.
