The following comments on the new academic year by staff members at the Hamilton Elementary Community Education Center address programs and activities. More about the evening programs will appear next month.
Dr. Glenda Bryant, Principal, says ‘The total staff of the Hamilton Elementary Community Education Center is very excited about the 1995-96 school year.
We hope to explore more cultural and educational regions in the community and to bring more of the community into Hamilton.” This theme is echoed by Administrative Assistant Joyce Hill who says, “You are most welcome anytime to stop by for a cup of coffee and a tour. And . . . if you have a spare hour, volunteer for a field trip or to assist teachers in the yard and the classroom.” Teachers emphasize academics. Betsy King, who teaches 2nd grade, said that ‘We have a terrific: 2nd grade team, Mrs. Peggy Meyer, Mr. Boyce Smith and myself.
We are excited about reading.
In my class, we’re taking reading across the curriculum. We’ve been reading about weather, writing about rainbows and distinguishing reality from fantasy. Our favorite book is “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.” Paula Knight, 3rd grade teacher, brings back the theme of community. “In this 3rd grade year, it’s time to experience the community. Third grade teachers Sharon Plut, Angela Crawford, and I are planning to introduce our students to community leaders, and neighborhood/community resources, that is the Zoo, Missouri Botanical Gardens and museums.” In the fifth grade, teacher Ray Roques said that he, Sharon Ware, and Varlene Jackson would focus on improving “SAT skills. We’ll be using a Skills checklist for mastery, non-mastery and reteaching.
We are also using sample tests for practice.
All of us are designing our tests to match the SAT format. And finally, every day at 3:15pm, over the school PA system which is set up as our radio station EHAM-ECEC, we will ask one SAT formatted question.” Again, Skinker DeBaliviere neighbors are urged to visit Hamilton, tour the facilities, and learn about ways they could volunteer.
