You And Your Trash

September 1995

Historical September 1995 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

The following information comes from the City of St. Louis Refuse Division. Yard Waste It is illegal to place yard waste–such as grass, leaves, tree branches–in regular trash contains. Recycle yard waste by not bagging grass clippings. Place all unwanted yard waste in dumpsters specifically marked “yard waste only.” These dumpsters are emptied every Wednesday, except during weeks with holidays, from April till December. Large branches–over 2 inches in diameter–should be bundled and set aside separately for bulky item pick-up (see below). Bulky Items Large items–such as furniture, matresses, lumber–are picked up by special trucks each month. Place bulky items out the Sunday evening of the week that contains the first Monday of the month and they will be collected some time that week. Place up to 3 items a month several feet from your dumpster.

If items are not collected by Thursday, call 622- 4800 to report that to the Citizens Service Bureau. Do not put bulky items in the dumpster. B.O.A.T. Items B.O.A.T. items include batteries from motor vehicles, oil from motor vehicles, appliances like refrigerators, and tires.

These are recycled by the city.

If you have B.O.A.T. items, do not put them in dumpsters. Set them out with the bulky pick-up during the week containing the first Monday of the month. Other Suggestions Regarding Trash Disposal • Cardboard boxes should be flattened to save space. • Food garbage should be wrapped up. • Pet waste should be disposed through the toilet but litter may be bagged for disposal. • Do not overload the dumpster.

It is overloaded when the lid cannot be closed. Take your trash to another dumpster if the first one is overloaded. • Trash must be placed in a dumpster.

It will not be picked up off the ground. Only bulky and B.O.A.T. items are picked up–once a month. • Do not attempt to move a dumpster yourself.

If it is blocking something, call the Citizen Service Bureau at 622- 4800. Remember: If you have a specific complaint or question about dumpsters or collection service, call the Citizen Service Bureau at 622-4800. if you would like more information about the city’s recycling and trash collection programs, please call the Refuse Division, 353-8877.
