A third community meeting to discuss a proposed playground for children 6 and under was held on April 18 at Grace Methodist Church. Playground committee member Dawn Blobaum explained that the playground would be located on the site of the parking lot adjacent to the Skinker DeBaliviere office at Kingsbury and DesPeres. Several of those in attendance expressed concern about the loss of parking spaces. Alderman McGuire noted that parking is allowed on DesPeres although few currently utilize it. DesPeres has also received enhanced lighting, increasing the safety of parking there.
The Playground Committee will now prepare grant applications to be submitted to foundations in order to obtain funds for building the lot and equipping it.
The land in question is owned by the city. Former SDCC director Kim Koenig, Alderman McGuire, and Neighborhood Stabilization Officer Jackie Wellington met recently with Anabeth Calkins of the Parks Department.
She told the group that the city would assume responsibility if the Parks Department approved the site plan and if there were an endowment to cover maintenance and repairs. Funds for such an endowment will be included in the grant applications.
