People’s Health Centers, a Skinker DeBaliviere neighbor at 5701 Delmar, is participating in a national program to test the performance of different types of drugs often used to treat high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol. People’s encourages area seniors to consider participating because the program, The Antihypertensive and LipidLowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (called ALLHAT), provides the most up-todate information and techniques in blood testing and ECGS and because drugs are provided free of charge. Services related to the program are provided at no charge, and participants have the satisfaction of knowing that they have joined a national research effort which could help people with high blood pressure live more productive and longer lives. Men and women aged 60 years or older who have high blood pressure and one or more additional risk factors for heart attack (such as diabetes and heart enlargement) can participate. Participants can expect to learn more about their condition because it will be closely and regularly monitored. K. Kalimba Kindel), Marketing and Outreach Coordinator for People’s, comments, “Many older people are unable to afford medications and this program may help them avoid having to choose between groceries and the medications their physicians have prescribed because funds are limited.” People’s Health Centers’ approach to health care focuses on the family and the community.
The emphasis is on primary care, health promotion, and disease prevention. Services are provided in a wide range of health areas, including family planning, podiatry, dentistry, internal medicine, adolescent health, HIV/AIDS counseling and testing, nutrition, substance abuse, and pediatrics. People’s is proud of an approach that makes services accessible, comprehensive, and affordable.
The closest center is located at 5701 Delmar (at DeBaliviere) and can be reached at 367-7848. Those particularly interested in the ALLHAT program for seniors with high blood pressure should ask for Clara Scott, Patient Services Coordinator.
