New City School, located nearby at Waterman and Lake, and led by Dr. Thomas Hoerr, our neighbor and Times columnist, is entering its 25th year of educating area children in grades K-6. New City is beginning this auspicious anniversary in a telling manner.

After raising one and a quarter million dollars, the school acquired nearby land and built a state-of-the-art playground and athletic fields. Besides being utilized by New City students, the facilities will be available to the neighborhood.

On November 3, several hundred fans of New City as well as countless students joined in the dedication and ribbon cutting for the new play spaces.

The crowd sipped cider and sampled cookies while admiring the design, the equipment, and the marvelous animal sculptures prepared by a local artist.

The frogs and the hippos were special hits.

The New City board dedicated the new playground to Tom and Karleen Hoerr amid rounds of applause.

A plaque will be placed at the site.

The official ribbon cutter was St. Louis’s mayor, Freeman Bosley Jr. Before the ceremonies began, he mingled with crowd, signed autographs for children, and spoke personally with many of the youngsters on hand.

In his remarks, Mayor Bosley praised New City School for offering the finest elementary education and said it should be a model for the city.

The festivities began at 4:00 p.m.

When they concluded, darkness had fallen, but New City lit the sky with brilliant fireworks, causing surprise and queries from helicopter traffic pilots! Congratulations New City and Dr. Tom Hoerr!
