July Food Drive Declared A Success

September 1993

One of the joys of life is helping other people, and on July 17 many Rosedale Neighbors must have felt particularly good.

The food drive collected two full truckloads of food and personal hygiene items. Originally, the collected goods were to be distributed between the food pantries of Grace Methodist, Grace and Peace, New Cote Brilliante, and St. Roch.

However, due to the Flood of ’93, we divided the items five ways. making a sizable donation to the Salvation Army Flood Relief.

The food drive was a success in part due to the block captains and other volunteers who distributed the flyers.

But the heroes of the day were the seven volunteers who teamed up to drive the two trucks, collecting the items in under two hours.

We have tentatively scheduled another food drive for February and hope to make it a quarterly event.

With the assistance of the SDCC Social Services Committee it is also hoped that we can bring the food drive to the entire Skinker-DeBaliviere Neighborhood.

To do this the number of volunteers would need to expand to 24 with the use of four more trucks or large vehicles.

This would allow six teams of four to collect in under two hours the items from their assigned blocks.

While the next drive is not until February, the possibility of expanding the food drive depends on more neighbors helping.
