A Different Perspective On The Governor’s Race

June 1992

Historical Summer 1992 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Tim Schoemehl’s father, Mayor Vincent C. Schoemehl, Jr., has been an elected official for all of Tim’s life.

As a consequence, Tim has had more exposure to politics than many children and has developed a strong interest in it. Tim has participated a good deal in his father’s current campaign to become governor of Missouri.

He has been able to travel to a number of counties, attending fundraisers, luncheons, picnics, and ball games.

He has enjoyed meeting people of diverse backgrounds—from farmers to newspaper publishers. Tim has learned the location of most of Missouri’s counties and the names of the county seats.

He also has learned about ethanol.

It is a cleaner-burning fuel than gasoline and could become an important industry for Missouri.

From his travels to Sikeston, Springfield, Lake of the Ozarks, Hannibal, St. Genevieve, Columbia, and Higginsville, Tim discovered that the rest of Missouri is not that different from his native St. Louis.

It has a different landscape, but people everywhere think the same.

They all seem concerned about jobs, education, and health care.

He feels fortunate to have been able to meet and talk with so many people from different backgrounds.

The downside of his experience is the fact that campaigning is long and hard.

His favorite stop may have been Hannibal.

There he had ample time to sightsee and he was able to get to all the locations associated with Mark Twain.

The best thing about all these campaign visits was to see how well received” his father is.

He had worried about how people out-state would react to a St. Louis candidate. Given all this experience.

I asked Tim if he would ever consider running for office.

He replied, “Lana, give me a break. I’m only 14 years old.”
