Young Artists Hands on Opportunities (YAHOO) is an apprenticeship program developed by the West End Arts Council and funded by the Regional Arts Commission.
It is designed for promising teenage artists who otherwise have limited opportunities to develop artistic talent and interests. YAHOO was inspired by a similar program in New Orleans.
The West End Arts Council is sponsoring a 12 week pilot program with 8 participants.
They meet for two hours on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and • also will have three weekend sessions; This pilot program focuses on sculpture.
The artistic director is Bill Christman whose studio is located at 6014 Kingsbury.
He is an accomplished • sculptor and will hold the sessions in his studio. Artists located close to Christman in Skinker-DeBaliviere will join in his efforts.
They include Ken and Kate Anderson, Bill Hawk, Diane Jarred, and Bill Kohn.
If this pilot effort is successful, the West End Arts Council will establish a formal selection process for interested youth in conjunction with the St Louis Public Schools. Pilot participants were referred by schools, churches, and the public library. Christman expects to display the works produced by YAHOO participants at a local gallery.
All items will be for sale. Proceeds will go to a scholarship fund for the young artist and the YAHOO program.
