Walgreen’s again has expressed a desire to locate a store on DeBaliviere at DeGiverville.
A year ago, residents united to defeat Walgreen’s effort to have that part of the lot zoned residential changed to commercial.
They objected to a store sitting back on the lot in the midst of several homes.
Residents also objected to the heavy traffic and debris such a store would attract as well as potential problems caused by liquor sales.
On Oct. 28, a meeting was held at the SDCC office to hear a presentation by Jim Koman of the Koman Group and the owner of the site. Koman promised that Walgreen’s would be a responsible tenant and that he would ensure that problems anticipated by residents did not occur.
However, many of those present expressed disbelief and reiterated their opposition to a Walgreen’s on this site. Koman said that without Walgreen’s the existing shopping strip could experience bankruptcy.
Some replied that Walgreen’s would not solve the strip’s problems: its rents are too high to attract tenants in the present market.
The parcel is too heavily mortgaged. Koman listened seriously to residents’ concerns.
It was clear that many would oppose a zoning variance that would allow a Walgreen’s to be built at DeBaliviere and DeGiverville.
