Once again, the residents of the 5700 block of Waterman prepare for the 1991 Block Is Beautiful Contest, and not without good reason.

The 5700 block of Waterman has won the Grand prize and has a history of winning First prize for our area. Ms. Charlotte Simpson has continuously motivated the residents to participate in the contest.

She was Block Chairperson the year the block won the Grand prize.

The grand prize is an all expense paid trip to the National Urban League Conference, which this year is being held in Atlanta. Georgia in July. Trophies are presented to the first, second and third place winners.

During the years 1987. 1988. and 1989. the Block won second, and third place, respectively, for the Area “A” Council.

According to Ms. Simpson, first place for Area “A” Council has been awarded to other blocks to encourage their efforts. “The residents of the 5700 block of Waterman need no longer make the efforts of others because their yards are established and well maintained year round,” she states.

Each year around this time, the block takes special care to spruce up its already well manicured lawns for the beautification contest. Many of the residents enter their front and back yards in the contest.

The judges look for cleanliness, green lawns, green back yards, painted houses. originality, flowers and other items that promote the general attractiveness of the yard. “The yards should be ready by the first week of June, because the yards will be observed during the first three weeks of June,” says Mr. Victor Saunders, current block Chairperson.

The contest is sponsored by the St. Louis Sentinel Newspaper, Anheuser-Busch, and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis.

All block units in the city of St. Louis, East St. Louis and in St. Louis County that are actively affiliated with the Urban League are eligible to participate.
