When Missouri artist Douglass Freed pondered the ultimate abstraction of painting, his thoughts ran to foreign rhythms and dream-like movement between pillars of hot and cold color—a painting in motion. Freed’s vision, a blend of abstract painting, atonal music, and modern dance, is being brought to the stage in Sanctuary.

The multi-media arts performance will have its world premier at the St. Louis Art Museum Theater at 8 p.m., May 10 and May 12 and at 4 p.m. on May 13. Sanctuary is a collaboration between the In Motion Dance Company of St. Louis, Freed, a nationally renowned painter living in Sedalia, West German composer Wolfgang Thierfeldt, and St. Louis writer Thomas C. Danisi.
