Gala Celebration of U. City Library

September 1989

Historical September 1989 report or notice. Original dates, prices and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

What do these well-known sayings have in common: “Tomorrow is another day!’ “We’re off to see the Wizard!’ and “I’d like to apply for a library card”?

They were all on the lips of University City residents in 1939.

The same year that gave us “Gone With the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz” was also the year that University City dedicated its public library.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the University City Public Library, a gala celebration with a 1939 theme has been planned by the Friends of the Library and the Library Board of Trustees. Featuring dance music by David Venn’s orchestra with vocals by Asa Harris, and an on-going mystery theatre written and directed by Robert Wilcox, the gala, is scheduled for Saturday evening, September 23, from 8 p.m. to midnight, at the library. Light refreshments will be catered by the European Caffe.

Admission is $25 per person and guests are encouraged to dress in clothing representative of the late 30’s and early 40’s.

Reservations for the 50th anniversary celebration may be made at the library or by mail.
