September 1989

Pet photo contest winners with librarian and poster.

Historical September 1989 report or notice. Original dates, prices and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Sixty splendid-looking animal photos were entered in the St. Louis Public Library Kiosk annual Pet Photo Contest, setting neighborhood judges Dr. Steve Brammeier and Georgie Fox a hard task. Their choices for winners follow: Best looking dog: Maggie Schoemehl who was photographed by owner Tim Schoemehl of the 61XX block of Westminster chasing a squirrel up a pile of logs. Best dog photo: Toby Smith owned by Tommy Smith of the 59XX block of DeGiverville. Toby is a handsome German Shepherd with light blue “husky” eyes. Funniest dog photo: Pepper Mash, a Dalmation, wearing a red bandanna five different ways in each of five photos. Pepper is owned by Carla Mash of the 6XXX block of McPherson. Animal family: Three Irish Setters named Pepito, Moonie, and Big Boy who are father, mother and son and live with their owner Tony Billups on the 58XX block of DeGiverville.

The Racing Form inspired their names.

Most unusual animal: A horse named Samson submitted by Elizabeth Renard of the 62XX block of McPherson. Best cat photo: Friskey Wiltenburg, although she looks anything but frisky asleep, draped on top of a radiator with tail and paws dangling down. Friskey belongs to the Wiltenburg family on the 61XX block of Kingsbury. Best looking cat: Catchaw Georgieff who has beautiful red hair but minus a tail from an incident with a dog a few years ago.

She is owned by the Georgieff family on the 61XX block of Westminster. Funniest cat photo: Abby Flynn who was hanging from the rafters when the picture was taken.

She belongs to the Flynn’s on the 59XX block of Pershing. Special Award: Annie Smith won for being a brave pussycat.

As her picture hung in the exhibit Annie was hit by a car in front of her house.

She dragged herself by her front feet to the lawn. Owners Bruce and Christine Smith took her to the vet to find she had a broken pelvis and two broken legs. Now, after three surgeries, she has begun to limp to her food dish and potty.

We wish to thank McDonald’s, Burger King, and the Coyote’s Paw on Delmar, and West End Wines on Belt for their generosity in this project.

If you missed it, you will be able to see the winning photos on exhibit at Art Exposed in October.

The party for children who participated in the Summer Reading Program will be Saturday, September 16th, at the Skinker DeBaliviere Community Council.
