Art Exposed ’89 On October 15

September 1989

Historical September 1989 report or notice. Original dates, prices and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Planning for Art Exposed ’89 is well underway.

The West End Arts Council will sponsor the event Sunday, October 15, 1989 from noon to 5 p.m. at Four Corners Plaza, Kingsbury at Des Peres. Several artists’ studios will be open for tour and a group exhibit will feature works by area artists. Art work by students from neighborhood schools will be displayed and sold with the proceeds divided between the schools and WEAC.

A two hour concert is planned from one to three p.m. featuring former members of the popular performing/recording group SPATZ: Charlie Pfeffer, Steve Mote and Lydia Ruffin. Bill Christman is again organizing an Edible Art Competition for Art Exposed. St. Louis’ First Edible Art Competition, held last year, was great fun and a great success. Judges for the contest are Vince Bommarito of Tony’s, Joe Pollack of the Post-Dispatch and designer Marcia Smith. Prizes include dinner for two at Fio’s La Fourchette, La Veranda, Richard Perry and Duff’s, among others. Individuals as well as caterers/restaurateurs are encouraged to enter the competition.

For more information about the contest call SDCC, 862-5122 or Bill Christman. Christman’s larger-than-life, flyswatting, short-order cook Mick deBitzko is again helping to promote Art Exposed. DeBitzko debuted at last year’s event in Christman’s studio which he converted to a 1940’s diner. Christman’s diner sculptures, 25 cent hamburgers and 6 oz. Cokes were major attractions of the afternoon. DeBitzko will be on hand this year as well, serving steaming bowls of chili soup at the mobile “Voo Doo Chili” diner whose motto is “Take it and Git!” Art Exposed has grown bigger and better each year since its inception in 1984; Art Exposed ’89 promises to continue the trend. Mark October 15 on your calendar now and watch for the October issue of the Times for more information.
