A series of free outdoor concerts sponsored by the Skinker DeBaliviere Community Council and the West End Neighborhood Arts Council began Sunday, August 30.

The first concert featured Tommy Bankhead and the Blues Eldorados performing at Four Corners Plaza. About 150 persons attended the event including many neighbors from Skinker DeBaliviere and the Central West End but many others from the county, as far away as Florissant.

The series is intended to: celebrate the diversity of the West End; highlight and build audiences for St. Louis artists; provide high quality, accessible, affordable cultural programs for our neighbors, and to draw people and positive attention to our neighborhood.

The first concert was a great success on all counts and the series is off to a promising start. Remaining concerts include: St. Louis Brass Ensemble Pershing Fountain, Pershing and Clara Sunday, September 13, 4 p.m. Synchronia Kingsbury Square Park, 5700 Kingsbury Sunday, September 20, 4 p.m. Singleton Palmer Four Corners Plaza, Kingsbury and Des Peres Sunday, September 27, 4 p.m.

David Hines Ensemble Maryland Plaza Sunday, October 4, 4 p.m. Black Repertory Company – Touring Children’s Show Lucier Park, 5800 Westminster Sunday, October 11, 4 p.m.

The performance series is made possible by contributions from the Musicians Performance Trust Fund, the Central West End Savings and Loan, a Regional Arts Commission grant, and a CITICORP Urban Renaissance grant. • Programs are informal (take your own chair) and open to the public.
