The Skinker DeBaliviere Community Council and the West End Neighborhood Arts Council will sponsor a RiverFaces Neighborhood Workshop on Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, 1-4 p.m., at Four Corners Plaza, Kingsbury at Des Peres. RiverFaces is a not-for-profit arts organization whose goal is to provide “participatory arts experience that builds a sense of community” The organization conducts mask and puppet workshops throughout the year in preparation for the annual RiverFaces parade.
This year’s parade theme is “Caretakers of the Environment” and will be held Saturday, October 10, 2 p.m. beginning at Market and 18th, downtown.
The neighborhood workshops begin on the first day with a half hour orientation: a description of RiverFaces, this year’s theme, and a slide show.
The remainder of the first day is spent on mask making, creating a clay mold, and paper macheing.
The second day is devoted to completing the masks, unmolding and painting, costuming, and a parade practice.
The neighborhood workshops are underwritten by a Citicorp Urban Renaissance Grant.
The SDCC is able to contract for the program for the nominal fee of $100. Children seven years or older may attend unsupervised, but families and adults are encouraged to participate. Participants are asked to bring newspapers, brown paper bags, and, if possible, a white bed sheet.
The workshop is free (donations are appreciated) and open to the public but advance registration is required.
