CONTACT-St. Louis will have a summer training class for persons interested in volunteering on its helpline.
The helpline is a crisis intervention, counseling and referral service for persons seeking assistance with problems, troubling situations and feelings. Volunteers receive 50 hours of training in active listening techniques and attend lectures on major life issues as well as participating in value clarification exercises and role play to practice new skills.
Following successful completion of training, volunteers commit themselves to 8 hours of service per month. “We’re hoping to attract new volunteers who may have had problems attending our training classes during the year,” said Joan Smith, executive director of CONTACT-St. Louis. “Working on the helpline is difficult and challenging—but also personally satisfying and enriching—just as training is. We’re looking for people who enjoy growing themselves and are interested in helping others grow.” Classes begin June 15.
