Well, we’ve done it again! In our neverending search for exciting fund raisers for The Paper, we’ve come up with a surefire scheme. This idea, sponsored by the Central West End Savings & Loan, is one that will be fun to do, enjoyable to watch, and profitable to boot. No, we’re not sponsoring a tag-team wrestling match in a vat of chocolate pudding. Nope, we haven’t been able to book The Beatles in Scariot Hall. What we have done is come up with a run that has a truly novel twist!

Imagine six joggers running together disguised as a six pack of beer! How about a hoard of killer bees or the Tin Man from Oz in track shoes? Better yet, can you envision ex-President Nixon trotting down the street in jogging apparel, giving his victory sign? All of these scenes—and more—are possible in the first annual

Paper Route Run to be held Sunday, April 20 at 9:00 a.m. What we’re doing is starting with a “normal” run, one in which t-shirts are given to all participants, and then adding an optional costume category with a $50.00 prize being given for the best costumed runner (individual or group). Everyone can enter; costumes are not required and our short 1.5 mile route is classified as a run/walk to encourage you sane non-joggers to participate. Your $5.00 registration fee ($4.00 if received by mail prior to the Run) entitles you to a “Paper Route” t-shirt. The run will start and end at the Central West End Savings & Loan parking lot (415 DeBaliviere). Participants will follow a route which will take them past Four Corners Square (DesPeres and Kingsbury) where the costumes will be judged. Our emphasis is on mass participation and fun, so there aren’t any prizes for speed. Most of the participants probably won’t wear costumes, but those who do should sure add a touch of spice to the sweat and sound of tennis shoes hoofing down the pavement!

We’re only offering shirts to the first 500 participants, and flyers will be sent to all area sporting goods stores, so don’t delay. Complete your application (found on p. 7) and mail it today.

Would you believe Tinkerbell in jogging shoes? How about a waiter running with water glasses (filled?) and menus? Look, over there, is that really the deposed Shah being chased by Iranian students? It’s amazing what some folks will do for $50.00!
