First Unitarian Sponsors Refugee Family

March 1980

Historical March 1980 report or notice. Original dates, prices and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Jean Dean, chairman of the Social Concerns Committee of First Unitarian Church, 5007 Waterman, announced the arrival of the Tran family on February .11. The Trans are from Viet Nam. They are living in an apartment house on Laurel owned by Ken and Nancy Cohen who, along with Gee Stuart of McPherson Management, have been helpful in getting them settled.

In addition to Mr. and Mrs. Tran, and their 1½ year-old son, there are two nephews, ages 14 and 19. None speak any English. The International Institute, on West Pine, has provided a translator to help the Trans communicate with church workers and neighbors. The Institute made arrangements for flying the Trans to St„’Louis and continues to help with funds, social services, and employment guidance.

Church members have supplied basic furnishings and food, and drivers and advisors on a daily basis. Neighbors have been helpful with additional clothes, furniture, and personal assistance.

The Trans lived in a small town before the Communist upheaval drove them from their home. Mr. Tran worked as a mechanic and his wife worked as a hospital attendant. The oldest nephew has been trained as a baker. As soon as they learn English the men will be ready to take jobs. Jay Brandt. of the International Institute, says that this takes only about a month, so any offers of employment are welcome.

Additional volunteers, especially daytime babysitters to allow Mrs. Tran to attend English classes, are needed. The family can also use chests of drawers. beds, tables and chairs, draperies and curtains, carpeting and rugs, lamps, and baby furnishings including a stroller. If you can help call Jean Dean, 522-3020, or the First Unitarian Church, 361-0595.
