Education

Hamilton Branch #3

November 1977

October has been a very busy month at Hamilton Br. III. The kindergarten and first grades made the annual trip to the Rombach’s pumpkin farm and came back laden with pumpkins. The fourth grade had a very interesting trip to the museum. of Science and Natural History. October was also full of holidays. The third grade celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day by watching the Walt Disney movie by that name and snacking on apple slices and apple cider. Columbus Day was recognized by stories, books, and pictures. Children may have seen our Teachers’ Inservice Day, October 12, as a holiday, but the teachers worked anyway. We had various workshops and meetings to attend in the morning, but after a delicious dinner, the staff participated in a human relations workshop in the afternoon. We all feel that we know each other a little better now.

We have many wonderful parent volunteers who are helping the shcool in many ways. Mrs. Krueger mentioned that she could help teachers plan some art lessons, and has suddenly found herself as an almost-full-time art eacher. We all certainly appreciate her. Other mothers have taken on the demanding and not-sopleasant job of assiting in the lunchroom and on the playground. These are definitely places where we need help. Parents have also volunteered to assist on field trips, be room mothers, and help in a variety of other ways.

One new, exciting venture being planned is the formation of a fourth grade boys basketball team, complete with equipment and red and white uniforms. Permission letters have gone home and tryouts are being held. We wish them all good times and good luck.

On October 27, Hamilton III celebrated “Good Bear Day,” a little known holiday honoring Teddy Roosevelt and promoting humanitarian treatment for all children everywhere.

October ended with a bang with our annual Halloween parade, followed by room parties for everyone. We thank those parents who helped with all our Halloween treats.

Many activities are planned for November, but the most important will be our Thanksgiving canned goods collection for needy families. Teachers will be donating fresh fruits and vegetables and money for turkeys for the families. We would welcome your support in this project.
