Schools Open — St. Roch’s

By Ann Horner, Yvonne Christopher

At 8:30 A.M. on September 6, the 1977 school year began at St. Roch. Sister Leo Ann was on hand to greet all the old friends and new additions, 228 children for the eight grades and kindergarten. St. Roch is fortunate to have most of our teachers returning for another year: Mrs. Jane Maull in kindergarten; Mrs. Jean Sanders in first grade; Sister Catherine in second grade; Sister Dorothy in third grade; Sister Charles in fourth grade; Mrs. Maggie Mahon in fifth grade; and Mr. Ed Martin in eight grade. Mr. Mike Grady in the sixth grade and Miss Lucia Gallo in the seventh grade are teaching at St. Roch for the first time.

Mr. Jim McGinn is the president of the school association for this school year. Their first function was a swimming party at the home of B.J. and Nancy Young on Saturday, September 10. The weather cooperated and it was a delightful affair. The first meeting of the association was held on Thursday, September 15. The indispensable buzz books were available at that time. The annual Century Club dinner will be held on October

1. John Roach is chairman. Tickets are $100 each.

The soccer season is in full gear. John Fitzgerald generously continues to serve as director of Youth Activities. The coaches are: John Fitzgerald, 1st and 2nd grade; Ed Gotway, 2nd and 3rd grade; Rich Bowe, 5th and 6th grade; Bob and Terry Murphy, 7th and 8th grade. All teams are entered in leagues and began play the last Saturday of September. Come to the games and see some real talent and enthusiasm!

Thanks to the volunteers who teach these classes (the faculty, parents, a priest in the parish, and many people in the neighborhood who help because they’re helping the neighborhood as well), St. Roch’s again this fall has an excellent lineup of mini-courses. New to the program are the Movement Education, Gymnastics, and Tennis courses brought to us by Dick Close of the Southside YMCA, whose cooperation is greatly appreciated.
