Historical October 1977 community material. Original health claims, services, prices and contact information describe the period, not current guidance or verified present-day availability.

With summer ending, there is a tendency for people to be outdoors less, and as a consequence, to get less exercise. We all know the importance of exercise for good health, but how many people enjoy calesthenics or other exercises? These are definitely good exercises, but they can get boring to some people, and they’re easy to put off. The Aquarian Community Center, located at the corner of Pershing and Des Peres, offers an alternative in yoga. The purpose of yoga is to promote good physical and mental health as well as relaxation by the performance of movements at your own particular level of ability. In addition, by learning these exercises in a group, there is more motivation to learn because there is support from the group. Yoga has no age limits. In fact, adults often do better than teenagers. In the past, the Aquarian Center has had students ranging from eight years old to the sixties. If you don’t think you have time for yoga, you would be surprised to experience the fact that yoga gives you more energy to perform your activities, and often, to do them in a more organized fashion. One particular group that tends not to get enough exercise is pregnant women. Believe it or not, there are a series of yoga postures for pregnant women which strengthen the muscles used during pregnancy and delivery and promote a calm emotional attitude during pregnancy. These are taught in a yoga and natural childbirth class which integrates the yoga exercises with the Lemaze method of natural childbirth.

Are expensive meat prices getting you down? Learn alternative, tasty methods of cooking at the gourmet meatless cooking class which will be taught by cooks from different restaurants in the St. Louis area. We also have vegetarian dinners on the second Sunday of each month which are open to all.

Still other courses to be taught this fall are meditation and astrology, for those who want to experience another means of self-awareness. The astrology classes do not approach this topic from the point of view of fortune-telling, but rather, by examing universal symbols.

The classes have just started and we would be happy to answer any questions you may have about them. We would like to stress that we are not a religious organization and we are not trying to convert anyone to any type of Eastern religion, which we do not happen to practice ourselves. None of the teachers receive money for giving classes, but they teach as a means of bringing people together and promoting human understanding. If you would like to receive a schedule or ask any question, call 726-5133 or 725- 3073. The best time to call either of these numbers is after 4 p.m. if you are unable to get an answer during the day.
