Local Board of Ed Candidates File Early

February 1977

From The Times Archives

Two Skinker-DeBaliviere residents have decided to run for the St. Louis Board of Education. They braved a January blizzard to collect signatures on their nominating petitions to file early in the morning to get advantageous positions near the top of the ballot. They are Betty Klinefelter, director of Grace PreSchool, and Marj Weir, a former teacher in the University City School System. The election will be held in April. There are several seats open on the board and at this writing the filing period is still open so there may be more candidates than the four who have currently filed.

Both Ms. Weir and Ms. Klinefelter are well-known in our neighborhood for their many community activities. The Paper invited each to discuss their reasons for running.

Marjorie Weir

As a person committed to city living and to the City of St. Louis, I cannot ignore the importance of a good school system to the health of our community. Difficult choices will face the School Board in future years. I am willing to devote myself to the task of making those choices in the most enlightened way I can. I am truly interested in education, as a parent, as a teacher, and as a citizen, and can bring to the post some varied background in education. I have taught both children and adults, supervised student teachers, represented teachers in professional organizations. Through .various civic activities I have come to know a large number of people across the City of St. Louis and have some sensitivity to the concerns that they feel about their city, their neighborhoods and their schools.

Betty Klinefelter

As a member of the Board of Education of the City of St. Louis, I will work toward my goal of having quality education for every kid in every level, in every school in St. Louis.
