Art Fair 1975 — Credit Where Credit Is Due

June 1975

From The Times Archives

By Gee Stuart

“I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to enter your unique community Art Fair. Needless to say your most generous first prize gift will be used for art supplies so that hopefully I can do it again.”

The above quote is from a letter the Art Fair Committee received from one of the artists the week after the Fair and is a tribute to the many people who planned and worked since last summer to make it happen.

Kathy Harleman and Marlene Mestres with the help of

Virginia LeGuey-Feilleux took special care of the artists and our judge, Mr. Douglas C. Norton.

The House Tour ran smoothly thanks to the efforts of Pat Kohn, Chris Lange, and Debby Bracey. Cherie McKee, Mary Boyts, and Frantzie Couch are to be thanked for recruiting and training house sitters without whose generous gifts of time there could be no House Tour. A large measure of gratitude is also owed to all who volunteered their homes for the House Tour and allowed hundreds of people to go through them.

Jane Cross, in charge of the children’s art, brought many proud smiles to the faces of young artists as they saw their work on display.

Brad Weir turned out a cast of almost thousands to put up the snow fencing in record time. There are always people willing to do the hard, dirty jobs which are the test of devotion.

Sue Tepas and Elaine Moore organized the Neighborhood FundRaising groups, which, by all reports, had a successful day.

For the first time this year we had an Information Booth, which considerably eased the confusion of our visitors and residents. This was organized by Marj Weir and Sue Tepas.

Dee Vossmeyer did a fine job of spreading the word through the various news media beforehand as well as producing follow-up coverage. Virginia LeGuey-Feilleux, Suzanne Hart, Marj Weir, and Dee Vossmeyer worked hard to bring together an outstanding application for the artists.

Joe Boyts was responsible for the smooth running of the traffic and is to be thanked for our fine police coverage which included a mounted patrolman.

Jo Ann Vatcha, assisted by Blanche Reel and Jim Templeton, organized the Sanitation and Clean-Up Committee, a vital, if unglamorous, job.

Of course, Susie Roach was always available to help in any way possible. She and Betty Newsham made sure our banner rose over Skinker. A thank you is extended also to the Skinker-DeBaliviere Community Council and Anna Busch who supplied all the secretarial services.

The above is a mention of only a small portion of those people who worked so hard this year. Many many thanks to anyone who had anything to do with helping us this year.

There will be a critique meeting for this year’s Art Fair-House Tour on Monday, June 16 at 8 p.m. at 6112 McPherson. We will also be looking for volunteers for committees for next year.
