Clean Sweep

December 1973

The City’s yearly house, garage and alley clean-up program, known as Operation Big Sweep was terminated for lack of funds in October.

While there is some hope that the program might be reinstated in the future, at the November Board meeting, SDCC members concluded that the three local neighborhood organizations would have to depend on themselves for Big Sweep operations in the near future.

Special collections can be arranged with the Sanitation Department by individuals or groups of home owners who have large amounts to discard, if they arrange such collections ahead of time and place all refuse in one location.

Both Rosedale-Skinker and WHN have, on occasion, used Beautification Commission trucks for alley clean-up campaigns.

In this instance, local residents with chauffeur’s licenses have driven the trucks and obtained the necessary permit to dump material in the city dump on Hall Street.

Parkview agents have, in the past, hired a private trucker to take care of the city residences at the same time that University city was doing a big sweep of homes located in University city.

Any residents who want to volunteer for clean up campaigns will be welcomed by their neighborhood association chairmen.
