Men’s Lib Cake Sale

June 1973

The Men’s Liberation Cake Sale, sponsored by the Rosedale-Skinker Improvement Association, was a resounding success. Gross receipts from the sale were $193.70 while expenses (for coffee, sugar, cream, etc.), were a mere $5.00.

Such results demonstrate what can be done when a dynamic neighborhood group works together..and togetherness was, indeed, the key to the success.

The men of the Association staffed the sale of the cakes, cookies, and cupcakes.

Joe and Marlene Mestres graciously volunteered their kitchen for coffee-making, etc. (When we ran out of cakes at 4:00, Marlene gave us the cake she had baked for her family’s dessert).

Grace Methodist Church provided the tables and chairs.

St. Roch’s Women’s Club furnished the cups, plates, napkins, and coffee pots.

The baked goods themselves were donated by the men and women of the Rosedale-Skinker Neighborhood who once again showed how much cooperation and community spirit there is in the area.

It’s not possible to list the names of all the residents who gave cakes, but they are, of course, the people who made the sale successful, and they are the people who make these few West-end blocks a neighborhood.
