When Gloria McCarthy and Tim Cantwell receive their Post-Dispatch Scholar-Athlete Awards in May, they are probably a “first” in another way. Both Gloria and Tim are graduates of the same elementary school (St. Roch’s) and both grew up on the same block (6100 Kingsbury).

Gloria is a senior at Xavier High School, and Tim will be graduating from C.B.C. Congratulations to them and to their parents, Jim and Anne McCarthy, and Wilma and Jim Cantwell.

A group of neighborhood children won prizes at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Science Fair. St. Roch’s eighth graders Marie Gartland, Mary Schiller, Caroline Broun and Joan Offner won first prize for their Study of the Moon’s Surface Exhibit. Ann Lottes, Jane Newsham, and Debbie Wilmering won second prize for an exhibit on the Zodiac.

In the sixth grade, Joe McMahon, Greg Fleck, Frank Kane and Ed Walsh were awarded a first prize for their Testing Soils exhibit and Bob Gartland won a second place with a Lemon Battery.
