Dear Editors: If you have driven over to enjoy Forest Park on any pleasant week-end, you must have noticed that if you manage to crawl through the traffic into the park. you can’t see the parkland for the cars. Even if you’re lucky enough to park without hitting anyone. the green space is spoiled with auto fumes, squeaking brakes, etc.
Let’s try and get people in this neighborhood and all over the city to write the Park Commissioner, their aldermen, the Mayor, and beg them to put up traffic barricades on week ends so that no motorized vehicles can go into the heart of the park (from the waterfall, up over Art Hill. around the Zoo and Pavillion, etc.). Grand Drive and the other outer drives could be one way. angle parking, parking lots.
Then just as we do at Six Flags and other parks, we can leave the cars behind and enjoy the beautiful well-kept parkland. Children could play and cross streets without danger and driver’s wouldn’t agonize about people popping out from between the tightly wedged cars.
From April through October. let’s enjoy a park, not a week end traffic jam.
