A variety of summer programs is being planned for the Skinker-DeBaliviere neighborhood this summer, by a combination of city and volunteer organizations.
The Department of Parks and Recreations, City Sponsored Program, will enlarge its summer playground, with assistance of volunteers from the three major churches and the neighborhood associations. The 1972 city playground will begin on June 19th and will be centered at Hamilton Branch 3, 450 DesPeres. Playing fields in Forest Park have been allotted to this program on a regular schedule.
Washington University has generously set aside two 45-minute sessions daily in its swimming pool with two instructor-guards provided by the City Recreation Department.
The Regular playground activities of games and crafts will be held on the Hamilton Branch 3 grounds and volunteers will be urgently needed to assist city personnel.
S-D Youth Council
The Skinker-DeBaliviere Youth Council is seeking funds for a carefully surveyed, well-organized program to provide both employment and recreation, especially for the 8.9% of the S-D population that fall in the 15-19 year old age group.
The Youth Council, moderated by Dorothy Garrett, plans to employ young people from poverty level families in a small scale manufacturing business in clothing and accessories. Along with this business the young people will have to acquire business and secretarial skills and experience. To complement the employment training, a program of recreation, sports, tours, etc. is planned.
The ultimate aim of this Youth Council program is to begin an employment-management program that can become self-sustaining from the sales of its products and provide young people with year-round employment and recreational activities.
People’s Community School
The People’s, Community School plans to continue its program with a variety of summer offerings from June 16 until August 25. Plans for classes in charm, dancing, karate, and drama are being scheduled at Hamilton School on Westminster. A free lunch program, in conjunction with the Youth Council program, will be offered at Hamilton School.
Volunteers Wanted!
Any and all of these programs urgently need volunteers to provide supervision and instruction for even a few hours a day. Call the SDCC office, VO2-5122 and let Anna Busch put you in touch with the program of your choice.
A run-down of summer activities will appear in the next issue.
