Renovation of the Skinker-DeBaliviere Community Council offices and preparation of The Learning Tree, day care center, received a big lift from five high school seniors working on their senior project.
Tim Eberle and Joe Neill, both local residents; Jim Twombley, whose grandmother lives on the 6000 block of Pershing; Don Martini and Tony Pickel, all of whom will graduate from St. Louis University High School this spring, spent three weeks painting and partitioning in the two buildings under the supervision of Mrs. Pat Kohn. Though the weather prevented them from doing their planned chores on the TotLot, the boys finished up their stint as community volunteers by surveying the Skinker-DeBaliviere area, locating derelict cars and sources of litter in local alleys.
This is a new program at St. Louis University High School, under which seniors take off three weeks early in the second semester and volunteer their time during school hours to community service projects. Mrs. Kohn reported that the day care center is opening at this time because these young volunteers pitched in and got the building ready for use. “We really appreciated the help these young men gave us,” Mrs. Kohn reports, “and hope we can supply some of next year’s seniors with challenging community projects.”
