As the school year ends we have many, many people to thank for giving of their time and energy to help us this year. We appreciate all the things they have done to help in the classrooms, on field trips, with the basketball team and the cheerleaders, supervising activities, selling fund-raising items, and many other things. Our volunteers include Rubina Patton, Carol Rhem, Loretta Lloyd, Loretta Smith, Mary Alice Krueger, Pat Krippner, Karen Bynum, Velma Aubertin, Louis McCrae, Harry Schmink, Marj Weir, Liz Hall, Mary Hopgood, Mary Parker, Sue Tepas, Toni Brady and especially those who gave so many hours to our basketball team and the cheerleaders, Harvis Moody, Roger Mick, and Florence Billups. It has been a wonderful year for our children, all these people have been instrumental.
Many of our teachers would like to announce the names of their award winning students, although some may prefer to keep everybody in suspense until our Awards Day Assembly on June 7th. Perfect attendance awards will be given to Raymonte Conner in Room 101, Edgar Epps from 102, Thomas Hopgood and Anita Watson from 103, and Lillian Blanchard, DeResa McCrady, Kelvin Ward and Terrance Whiting from Room 204. Special mention should also be given to Melton Smith, Beth Bynum and Ronald Gregg who missed only one day this year. Scholarship awards will also be given to the following people from Room 204 – DeResa McCrady, Lisa Harper, Tracy Poston and Carl McCrady, and to Tracy Strong and Margretta Travis of Room 102.
Room 103 would like to announce the safe arrival of 12 baby chicks. We remembered to turn the eggs over twice a day and keep our incubator at approximately 103 degrees. The day of the hatching proved to be a very exciting one, as the children watched the chicks peck their way out. The thing that impressed the children the most was that they could hear the baby chicks peeping and chirping while they were still inside the eggs.
At the present time Room 103 is experimenting with corn seeds. We are trying to find scientificly what plants need to grow. We are trying to grow seeds with no light, no water, no air, or no soil (that is, in sand or rocks). We have made some predictions about the outcome and, hopefully, the children will discover what plants do need.
Room 103 had some entries in the Art Fair and two were winners in the painting division. First place went to DeRan Washington and second place to Beth Bynum. Audrey Pearson from 104 won First Place in the pre-school and kindergarten craft division.
Rooms 201, 202, 203 and 204 are on our way to Springfield and Salem, Illinois for an all-day field trip to the “Land of Lincoln.” We will go by Amtrak train and return by Greyhound buses on June 2. We’ve sold Tootsie Roll Banks, had a bake sale, and we’re finally ready to go, all 85 of us. This is a well-deserved treat after a long year’s work. •
We’re very proud of Jacques Banks, Bruce Krippner, Nicole Rhein and Christopher Thomas who have been accepted into the Gifted Program from our school. We wish them well!
Our 4th graders went to the Mark Twain Theatre on a field trip to see Bill Cosby in the movie “Man and Boy.” It was a fine film and we enjoyed it very much. Room 203 also experienced a super voyage into space at the 4th R Gallery where there was a simulated spaceship with special light effects and we were the astronauts. Then we all made our own androids before we returned to school.
On a bright but cold day the first week in May, we spent the morning on the levee observing Eads Bridge as a follow-up on our “James Eads: Early St. Louis” project which we had in cooperation with Cemrel and the Missouri Historical Society. After a tour of the exhibit in the Arch Museum, we saw a film on Lewis and Clark and “How the West Was Won.”
We’re still agog about our Sports Banquet held at Hamilton Branch III for the Central City Basketball League. The basketball teams and cheerleader squads from Clark Branch II and Hamilton Branch 11 with their coaches, teachers, parents and principals were our guests. We had several very, very important guests including Dr. Mahan, Mr. Wyatt, Mrs. Klinefelter and Mrs. Weir from the Board of Education; Mrs. Ellen Zimmerman, the founder of the League, and Sergeant Thomas Rooks from the Seventh District Police Station who was our speaker.
Our team won the championship and each boy received his own trophy as well as our school holding the large City Trophy. Boys receiving trophies were Scott Shelton, Mark Hall, Chris Thomas, Gregory Williams, William Jefferson, Jeffrey Navies, Andre Myles, William Brady, Maurice Hennings, Lamont Netter, Richard Strong, Timothy and Ronald Coleman, Kemar Cooper, and Bruce Krippner, our team mascot.
In addition to the good food, we had a lovely program presided over by Tommie Ferguson, Nicole Rhem and Bruce Krippner.
We’re ending a very productive year and Mrs. Billups is proud of the academic achievement and attendance records. Prospective perfect attendance awardees are William Brady, Chris Thomas, Andre Myles, Tracy Thompson, Alfreda Battle and Leslie Christian.
Room 201 would like to congratulate these students who have worked diligently during the school year in the areas of citizenship, scholarship and attendance: Ferlissa Finkley, Citizenship: Belinda Bishop and Ferlissa Finkley, Scholarship; Maurice Hennings, Perfect Attendance for the entire 1977-78 school year.
Several representatives from Hamilton School and Hamilton III have been meeting with neighborhood people and Northwest Soldan district officials in a Task Force on Quality Education and Integration. The Task Force consists of the principals of both schools, two teachers from each school, two parents from each school and four representatives from the community at-large. We have been discussing methods for improving the educational program and the neighborhood image of both schools, in the hopes that we can interest more parents in sending their children to our schools.
