The school year at
St. Roch is moving at a rapid rate. The weeks are zipping by for both the students and the teachers. Spirit, enthusiasm and cooperation are at an all time high. Father Fleming has been making many visits to the classrooms this year. The children enjoy his wit and scholarly observations. Father’s time and effort are sincerely appreciated. The additional art and gym classes each week have been well received. This schedule allows for a more unified, thorough and interesting program for both subjects. Keep up the good work Mrs. Crawford and Mrs. Fiquette!
All textbooks for all grades have been upgraded. Many hours of time and hard work went into selecting the best texts for the school. Teachers and parents perused several texts for each subject. After numerous consultations the decisions were made. The books are superb. Even the children noticed the quality of these books which have been entrusted to them.
On Thursday, September 29, the school children participated in a special afternoon Mass. Father Peet was the celebrant. He gave a thought provoking talk on how to get along with one another and to do one’s best with God’s help. Representatives from each class brought symbols of their school work to the altar as their offering. The petitions asked for a safe, successful and happy school year.
On October 20, the seventh and eighth grades participated in a Pro-life Mass. It was preceded by a film on the value and meaning of each and every life.
The second through eight grades took the Iowa Basics tests the first week of October. The answer sheets are machine scored so the results are not expected until November.
St. Roch is very fortunate to have the assistance of two Title One teachers this year. Their home base is the Blue Hills Homes Corporation, School Division -St. Louis, 4140 Lindell. Two classrooms in the west building have been assigned them. Mrs. Saunders is working with grades one through six in reading. Mrs. Starks is working with grades one through six in math. These two ladies will also test the first grade, in groups of ten, on both these subjects.
Two St. Roch students submitted the same winning name for the Seventh District horse. Paul Pini in the eighth grade and Danny McGuire in the second grade were awarded twenty-five dollar savings bonds for the name “Jusitce.”
A Science Club is being formed for the eighth graders. The interested students will meet in the evenings to do some star gazing with the telescope that the students purchased last year. Dr. Elder is in charge.
There are some important dates to remember in November. On Sunday, November 6, there will be open house at all Catholic high schools. If anyone is interested in seeing a school in order to make an intelligent choice for next year, this is your opportunity. On Sunday, November 13, the teachers will meet with parents for the first report card and conference. Parents will be notified of their times to meet with their child’s teacher. November 17 brings another School Association meeting. At this time there will also be an open School Board meeting.
