Letter — Objection to New City Court Hours

By Mrs. Parker Burns, Mrs. Robert Fetch

August 27, 1975

Letter to the Editor:

The City Courts will move in September to their plush new facilities in Kiel Auditorium, and in keeping with their “new look” there will be a new schedule. We regret that once again there is evidence of a callous lack of concern for citizens in the planning of the court sessions, particularly with reference to the Housing and Sanitation Courts. The role of these courts in the well-being and maintenance of our neighborhoods cannot be overemphasized. Here-tofore, these courts have sat at night. Now they will be held in the afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. A more inconvenient and unreasonable choice of time could riot have been made, for number of reasons. Consider, for exaMple:

1) Loss of income for the worker 2) Problems created for parents with school age children 3)Transportation difficulties (peak hours) Furthermore, we foresee problems arising for the city inspectors and as taxpayers we resent this cutting into the daylight hours so necessary to the performance of their work. The Women’s Crusade Against Crime has consistently advocated extension of court sittings to include more night sessions as well as Saturday mornings. After all, are the courts there to serve the people, or the convience of the officials? Sincerely, Mrs. Parker Burns Co-Chairman, Court Committee Women’s Crusade Against Crime Mrs. Robert Fetch.
