SDCC — New Board Members and Committee News

May 1972

Three newly elected Board members and one newly reelected were seated at the March meeting of the Skinker-DeBaliviere Community Council. From Washington Heights Neighbors came Mrs. Clarice Haynes, Mrs. Georgia Barnett, and Mr. Eddie L. Sanders. Rosedale-Skinker sent as its representatives Mr.

Boyd Morros and Mrs. Sharon McPherron.

Mrs. Haynes, of 5745 DeGiverville, is the mother of five children and Director of Community School. Her husband works with her in the school and is employed at Scullin Steel Co. Both have been very active in neighborhood affairs.

Mrs. Barnett, of the same DeGiverville block is a housewife who has been active in its block unit. Last summer she helped sponsor a very successful Youth Bazaar, where youngsters sold their own products. At Christmas the same organization did a gift program for all the children on the block (116 of them under 17!). Her husband is employed at Ford Motor Co.

Mr. Sanders lives at 5911 DeGiverville. He has been block chairman and at present is a vice-president in Washington Heights Neighbors. He has three children and is a crane operator at Lipsett Steel. Boyd Morros of 6120 McPherson is former block chairman. He is a teaching assistant in the education department at Washington University. His wife Lucy grew up in the house where they now live. They have a new baby.

Sharon McPherron of 6171 Kingsbury has been on the Board for some time, serving as treasurer. She has four children, the youngest being two-year-old twins. She teaches sociology at Florissant Valley Community College and works with her husband Tom in his business. How she manages to do what she does is one of the wonders of our neighborhood!

Officers for the 1972-1973 year were elected by members of the board of the Skinker-DeBaliviere Community Council, Inc., at its regular April meeting. Virgil (Jack) Wright was elected president. He had been acting president since the resignation of Bob Moore this winter. Ken Cohen of Rosedale-Skinker was elected vice-president. Sister Virginia Williams and Sharon McPherron were re-elected secretary and treasurer respectively.

THE CRIME COMMITTEE presented 7th District crime statistics for January-March. The figures for the Skinker-DeBaliviere neighborhood were not available but should indicate that crime in the area is down considerably from last year in almost all categories.

The etching tools for marking personal properties are being well used and all residents are urged to contact the SDCC office and take advantage of this crime preventative.

This committee is studying the organizational set-ups of various citizens’ mobile patrols and also whether there is any interest in this activity in the neighborhood.

THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE is working with the Hamilton School administration on a plan to study faculty needs and attempt to meet them with the resources of the community.
