From Our Readers — Dumpster Decorum

Historical Winter 2006 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

A longtime resident on 61xx Westminster wrote us complaining about dumpster decorum.

She noted that people weren’t breaking down boxes before throwing them in a dumpster, seriously diminishing space available to all neighbors. Nobody seemed to be picking up litter in the alley.

This note resonated with me. Trash disposal can be a problem when not everyone cooperates. But, it is even worse when outsiders use our alleys as their dumping ground. Recently, someone working on a rehab job packed our dumpsters with plaster, wood, and all kinds of other materials.

I was afraid the sanitation crew would be unable to empty them but, luckily, that fear was warrantless.

We also got a bunch of furniture dumped in the alley the day after bulk pickup!

We lived with that for a month.

I had read that sanitation was going to place cameras in locations where dumping is frequent. Please, please come to my block! So, trash decorum is always needed and let’s get those feckless outsiders who dump in our dumpsters and in our alleys!

This newspaper will be happy to publicize anyone who successfully catches a dumper!
