The Skinker DeBaliviere Little Free Library at the corner of Kingsbury and Des Peres is 6 months old and the response from the neighborhood has been great. I’ve talked with neighbors who have picked up books and I really enjoy hearing how much they use it!
I have tried to keep a good selection of books stocked and I also see new books being shared all the time.
I wanted to start the Little Free Library in our neighborhood, because I love to read myself, and want to promote reading and the sharing of books with our neighbors. Since most folks aren’t familiar with the idea of a Little Free Library, I thought I would pass on some answers to questions that I get from time to time. “What is this little box about?” The Little Free Library is a book sharing box that allows anyone to share books with everyone!
If you have a book that you are done with, just leave it in the box for someone else to enjoy! “Do I have to bring the books back? Can I keep it?” YES!
The idea is different from a traditional library.
In this library, if you find a book that you just love, you can keep it as long as you like. Books need a good home! “What if I have books I want to give away?” The Little Free Library is a great way to share those books you are done with.
If you have a couple of books, just put them on the shelves, books for older readers on the upper two shelves, books for younger folks on the bottom shelf. “What if I have a BOX of books to share?” The Little Free Library has a limited space for sharing.
I suggest that you put a couple of your favorites on the shelves and then donate the others to one of the used book stores in town. Keep sharing those books!
