A recent Delmar Commercial Committee meeting was a full house as our committee of residents and business owners met to hear the great new plans for the Global Foods Market, the first full-service grocery store to locate in the Skinker-DeBaliviere Neighborhood in more than 30 years.
This market will be modelled on the highly successful Global Foods located in Kirkwood, which introduced St. Louis to a very wide range of foreign foods, while stocking all the standard “American” foods as well. Shayn Prapaisilp, vice president of Global Foods Market, shared his family’s vision for the the new location in the Delmar Loop: an urbanconcept grocery store that will cater not only to students, but also the greater community.
In addition to carrying everyday staples like bread, milk, fresh produce and toiletries, the store will feature a large selection of international and gourmet groceries and an extensive section of prepared foods, including hot food stations, grab-and-go items, and salads and sandwiches. Cheryl Adelstein, Washington University’s director of community relations and local government affairs and WU’s representative to the Skinker-DeBaliviere Community Council, said, “Many of those living and working in the surrounding neighborhoods have expressed a desire for a quality grocery store located nearby.
The university is delighted to welcome a locally owned, unique grocer to add to the vibrancy and sustainability of the Loop.” Questions from the committee included the availability of parking. WU’s Adelstein responded that they have a new agreement with the Schoomers to use their parking lot (behind Mission Taco), as well as street parking on both sides of Eastgate for handicap and other short-term users. Whether walking or driving, the neighborhood welcomes Global Market and looks forward to many years of enhanced and convenient shopping and dining on Delmar!
