Editor’s Notebook — An Upbeat Neighborhood

September–October 2011

After a little reflection, I would characterize Skinker DeBaliviere as an upbeat neighborhood.

It has a resiliency born in difficult times that serves it well now. Neighbors take adversity in stride.

After all, there is a point of comparison when things were less safe and neighbors more transient. Crime still occurs, students can be disruptive but the general attitude is that this too shall pass. Also, many of us are sophisticated enough to know who to reach out to to solve problems of urban life.

We have an active security committee and a council dominated by younger residents with families who feel the neighborhood is worth the struggle. I’ve lived in a number of neighborhoods in a number of cities but cannot recall a place like this one where neighbors become fast friends.

There are shared values and shared experiences which create tight bonds.

A number of us have been active in politics too. St. Louis provides many opportunities to get to know your elected officials and work together to enhance the community.

We never rest on our laurels. Hence, we look forward to the marketing study for Delmar. And, we celebrate the centenary of St. Roch.

There is a vibrant life here for those who want it. Hopefully, it will continue to yet another generation.
