Students and faculty of St. Roch School honored Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of all people living in harmony with a special prayer service January 14th.

The focus of the service was the theme, “Who is Our Neighbor?” Gathered in St. Roch Church, the students prayed for peace and nonviolence, not only for the SkinkerDeBaliviere neighborhood, but for all metropolitan areas. Representatives from every class processed into the church with decorated banners bearing the names of all the students in his or her class.

These banners symbolized each student’s pledge to walk with the Lord by peacefully respecting all people. Eighth grade students Jay Gerard and Sylwinn Wyllie led their fellow students in prayer. Eighth graders Candice Carter and April Homberger acted out the poem, “As I Grew Older” by American poet Langston Hughes, who has represented the voice of many African-Americans. Seventh grader Sara Vanderbeek and eighth grader Ginger Harris led the students in the song “Pass It On” by Kurt Kaiser.
